Printers

Our main printer is an Epson Stylus Pro 9900. We feel that for the great majority of fine art prints this is currently the worlds finest inkjet printer. It is the latest generation of Epson printer and uses UltraChrome HDR archival inks. The Epson 9900 is capable of producing prints on a wide variety of substrates including fine art papers and canvas, at sizes up to 44" wide and unlimited length. It offers unparalleled colour consistency, a rich gamut of colours, and rich colour depth and detail. There are occasions when we may feel our HP Z series printer using Vivara pigment Inks, is a better choice, especially for black and white prints.

In every respect we have sought to employ the very best technology and materials currently available, but the care skill, sensitivity and craftsmanship given during the production process is crucial to achieving the finest results. Peter is a well known artist in his own right and when requested can bring a discerning eye along with technical skills to bear when working on your artwork.

All projects are welcome no matter what their size or complexity. This includes working from a client's processed or unprocessed files, photographing original artwork and producing very accurate fine art reproductions.

Processing and Proofing

Clients are most welcome to join us in the studio to work together on an image.

We are very happy to print from your digital files. Please contact us if you require advice on file format etc.

When making a fine art reproductions, the quality of the scan/photograph of the art work is crucial to the end results. This studio is equipped and dedicated to doing this work. We implement rigorous colour management systems throughout the whole process which means generally the digital files need relatively few adjustments. Ideally the original artwork is present when making print reproductions to confirm that critical colours etc. are correctly rendered.

Proof test prints are printed until a client is entirely happy with the results. Clients may suggest various changes at this stage.

Papers

A wide range of our favorite papers are stocked. We also have samples of most of the quality inkjet papers which may be seen when considering the paper choice. These can be ordered when requested. And if there is a quality paper that you would particularly like to use which we don't know about, we are most willing to order it. Information about Watercolour paper, Baryta papers and Canvases may be seen on the 'papers' page.

We are somewhat skeptical about the claims made by manufacturers of inks and papers with regards to the archival 'permanence' of their products - which may be stated as 200 years or more. This is partly because their tests are made under highly controlled and artificial conditions. However, in the real world it seems to be true that top end professional large format printers made within the last 3 years will use inks with an extremely long life and concerns with fading that were very real a few years ago are no longer a issue.

As well as the inks, the paper type will also effect a print's longevity. The finest inkjet papers are usually made from unbleached 100% cotton rag, are acid and lignin free and have an alkaline calcium carbonate buffer layer. Less expensive papers may not have the same archival ratings.

Edition Provenance Certificates

Many artists and photographers create editions of print, both limited and unlimited. I can keep track of your edition numbers and produce a provenance certificate to accompany each print.
